FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is an Asscher cut diamond?

The asscher cut is a blend of the princess and emerald cuts with X-shaped facets from its corners to its centre cutlet. It is recognisable by its larger, wide-set facets, making the stone octagonal in shape. Due to their step-like cuts, asscher cut diamonds will display more inclusions than round diamonds. The asscher cut diamond is identified by its 58 larger step facets, smaller table, and higher crown.

Do Asscher cut diamonds look larger than other types?

Asscher-cut diamonds tend to look smaller face-up than other diamond shapes of the same carat weight. The four shapes that look the largest per carat are marquise, pear, oval and emerald diamonds. Asscher Cut are considered the smallest looking diamonds because of their square length-to-width ratio.

Asscher Cut or Princess Cut Diamonds?

Asscher and Princess Cuts share a similar, square-looking shape, which makes them comparable for many settings. There are some key differences however, most notably that princess cuts are more brilliant due to the differences in how their facets are aligned.

Both diamonds have a predominantly square shape, in that they have equal lengths and width. The main difference is their corners. Princess cuts have sharp corners while Asscher cuts have angled corners that make an octagonal shape.

Asscher cuts are a little more affordable than princess cuts. This is due to princess cuts having more brilliance. However, when it comes to deciding which diamond cuts suit your setting the best, that all comes down to your personal preference and style of setting.

Why Choose a Asscher Shaped Engagement Ring?

Asscher cuts diamonds are known for their clean and elegant look. Rectangular facets allow for a lot of light to enter the diamond and give off large flashes. They are also designed to maximise the lustre and clarity of a stone. As opposed to flaunting the fire or brilliance found in many cuts. This diamond cut is the right one for a diamond engagement ring if you are looking for a one-of-kind engagement ring with a vintage touch. They don’t have sharp edges making them less prone to breakage.

A little History on Asscher Cut Engagement Rings

The name of the Asscher cut originates from I.J. Asscher Diamond company. It was established by Joseph Isaach Asscher in Holland in 1854. It wasn’t until 1902 that the diamond cut was created and gained popularity in 2002. The original cut design has 58 facets and was never patented. There are some criteria in the cuts. Including larger step facets, a higher crown and a smaller table. The result is a diamond that has more weight than other cuts and a classic look.

After a decline in popularity, Edward and Joop Asscher improved upon their ancestor’s design by creating the Royal Asscher cut. It was created by using modern diamond-cutting techniques to improve the cut and quality of the traditional Asscher cut diamond. They raised the crown and added more facets for a total of 74, but preserved the brilliance and classic look of the original design.
