The History & Meaning of a Ruby

The word ruby comes from Latin ruber, meaning red. In Sanskrit, the ruby is called Ratnaraj “king of the precious stone”. They were first discovered in the Mogok region of Myanmar as early as 2500 BC. People in India believed that rubies enabled their owners to live in peace with their enemies. Rubies are created well below the earth’s surface under extreme heat and pressure. Oxygen and aluminium atoms, when compressed create corundum. The presence of chromium gives the gem its stunning red appearance. The intense red colour represents love, anger, passion, and fury. It’s associated with objects of power and desire, like fast cars and red roses. Rubies are considered one of the rarest gemstones and those larger than one carat are even rarer. As a symbol of passion, ruby makes an ideal romantic anniverary gift.

The 4 C’s of Ruby Gemstones

At Waldemar Jewellers, our proficiency in determining the quality of jewels and gemstones is one of the reasons we have earned the reputation of being Sydney’s best jeweller. When assessing the quality of ruby, we follow the four C’s; cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

Cut: Rubies exist in many shapes and cuts in the market, rubies reveal their full beauty when they are cut. However, because a rough ruby is so valuable, dealers and consumers accept gemstones without the precision cuts required of fine diamonds.

Colour: Most fine rubies have a medium to medium-dark tone. A ruby should not be so dark that its colour is obscured, nor so light that its colour appears diluted or distinct. They get their reddish colour from traces of the element chromium in its crystal structure.

Clarity: Every natural ruby gemstone has colour impurities or inclusion in it. Therefore, the value of a ruby depends upon the visibility of these inclusion particles. The best clarity grade for ruby is “eye-clean” which means no inclusion is visible to the naked eye.

Carat Weight & Size: A ruby of five carats is large enough to get the attention of serious gem collectors. The greater the weight of the ruby, the better value and quality it has in the market
