DIAMOND COLOUR

What causes colour in diamonds?

A pure diamond crystal is translucent colour D, as it is composed of only carbon atoms, each of which have four valence electrons.

A Yellow diamond, a few carbon atoms per million have been replaced by nitrogen atoms each containing five valence electrons. The structure of the diamond crystal does not change significantly, however the electrons occupy a donor colour.
