CARAT
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond not the size. The larger the carat is does not however necessarily mean better.1 carat is equal to 100 points, so therefore ½ carat is equal to 50 points or 0.50 carats.
Also although a 2ct diamond weighs twice as much as a 1ct diamond it does no appear to be double the size from the top as the weigh is spread over the entire stone.
When diamonds are mined larger gems are discovered far less frequently than smaller gems. This taken in to consideration means for example a 1ct diamond of the same cut, colour, clarity as a ½ carat will be more than twice the value.
