The below diagram shows the proportions necessary for an ideal cut diamond.

  1. The cut of this stone is too shallow. This means the light is able to pass though the bottom of the stone before it can be reflected.
  2. The cut of this stone is too deep. This means the light is reflected sideways and passes through the side of the stone
  3. The cut of the stone is of good proportions. This means the light is reflected from one facet to another and is passing back though the top of the stone, with minimum light escaping.
