CARAT
Carat refers to the weight of the diamond not the size. The larger the carat is not however necessarily better.1 carat is equal to 100 points, so there for ½ carat is equal to 50 points or 0.50 carats.
The carat size alone has no relevance when it comes to value.
A large stone is not particularly valuable if it has a low colour, purity and brilliance. All these factors come into play when valuing a diamond. However if a 1carat diamond has the same colour, purity and brilliance as a 50point diamond if would be significantly more valuable as larger diamonds are rarer.
The diagram opposites show the ideal sizes of carat weights cut to proper proportions.
